Search for car shipping companies and you will find dozens of them, most offering what looks like the same service at prices that vary more than you would expect. The quotes come back quickly, the websites look similar, and it is not obvious what actually separates one company from the next.
The difference usually shows up after you book, not before. Here is what to look at while you are still comparing.
Start With How Long They Have Been Doing It
Auto transport is a business where experience shows. Routes, seasonal demand, carrier relationships, and the handling of a vehicle that needs extra care are all things a company learns over time.
A company that has been running for decades has moved cars through every season, every route condition, and every kind of delivery problem. One that opened last year has not.
Ask how long they have been operating. It is a simple question and the answer tells you a lot.
Check Whether the Price You Are Quoted Is the Price You Pay
This is where most of the frustration in this industry comes from.
Some quotes are estimates that move once a carrier is assigned. Customers book at one number and get asked for a higher one later, usually when the vehicle is already scheduled and it is difficult to walk away.
What to look for:
- A guaranteed price, stated as guaranteed, not an estimate or a starting figure
- No deposit required to hold the booking, or a deposit that is clearly refundable
- A written quote you can refer back to
- Clear terms on what is included, so nothing appears later as an extra
If a quote is noticeably lower than the others you have received, it is worth asking why before assuming it is a better deal.
Ask What Happens on Pickup Day
A quoted date and a guaranteed date are different things.
Many companies give a pickup window and work to fill it when a carrier becomes available on that route. That works out much of the time. When it does not, the vehicle sits and the schedule you planned around moves.
Ask directly whether pickup is guaranteed or scheduled subject to availability. If your move depends on the car leaving on a particular day, this is the question that matters most.
Look for Third-Party Verification
Company websites will tell you the company is good. Outside sources are more useful.
- BBB rating. An A+ rating reflects a documented record of handling complaints properly
- Reviews across more than one platform, read for patterns rather than individual scores
- Licensing and insurance, which any legitimate carrier will confirm on request
- Repeat customer rate, which is the one most companies do not publish
That last one is worth asking about. Auto transport is often a one-time purchase, so a company with a high proportion of returning customers is doing something the others are not.
Confirm the Service Details Before You Compare Prices
Two quotes are only comparable if they cover the same service. Check:
- Door-to-door or terminal-to-terminal. Door-to-door means the driver collects and delivers as close to your address as the truck can safely reach. Terminal service means you drop off and collect at a depot
- Open or enclosed transport. Open carriers are standard and suitable for most vehicles. Enclosed costs more and suits classic, luxury, or low-clearance cars
- Transit time estimates for your specific route
- Condition reporting at both pickup and delivery, which protects both sides
Questions Worth Asking Before You Book
Five questions that tend to reveal the difference between companies:
- How long have you been in business?
- Is this price guaranteed, or is it an estimate?
- Is pickup guaranteed on the date we agree?
- Do you require a deposit, and is it refundable?
- What proportion of your customers come back to you?
How American Auto Transporters Compares
We have been shipping vehicles since 1980, which is over 46 years on the road. We offer guaranteed prices and guaranteed pickup, hold a BBB A+ rating, run daily trips to Florida, and provide door-to-door service nationwide.
80% of our customers come back to us. In a business where most people ship a car once, that is the number we would point to first.
